CCTV Cameras on Trains
July 14, 2025 - Indian Railways has taken the decision to install CCTV cameras in the passenger coaches and engines of trains. This initiative ws given the approval after the pilot project got good results. The target of this proposal is to curb illegal acts, such as theft and crimes, and enhance passenger safety on trains.
"This move will significantly improve passenger safety. Miscreants and organised gangs take advantage of gullible passengers. With cameras, such incidents will significantly reduce. To preserve privacy of passengers, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors," the Railways Ministry said.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has given the nod to install CCTV cameras in 74,000 coaches and 15,000 engines. Four dome CCTV cameras will be installed in each coach. Along with this, there will be two CCTV cameras at each entry way of the coaches and six CCTV cameras in the locomotive. This will include one camera each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive. Each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with one dome CCTV camera and two desk mounted microphones.
The cameras will be able to provide high quality CCTV footage even at a speed of 100 km per hour and in low light.
