A leopard was spotted on the leopard safari track in Jaisamand Sanctuary for the first time in nearly 10 months. Captured by camera trap at 10:10 AM on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, the sighting has sparked optimism among forest officials and tourists alike. The leopard safari, which commenced on May 22 last year, had not witnessed any leopard sightings until now, leading to a decline in tourist interest.

Forest officials view this event as a breakthrough, hoping it will encourage more leopards to overcome their hesitation and venture onto the safari track. The presence of these elusive creatures is expected to boost tourist numbers, which have been low, with only 2 to 3 vehicles embarking on the safari daily.

The officials explained that vehicle noise initially deterred the leopards. However, the recent sighting suggests that leopards are beginning to tolerate the vehicles, a significant step towards coexistence.

Before this exciting leopard sighting, a sloth bear was spotted on January 17, 2024, highlighting the sanctuary's growing appeal to wildlife. With three bears currently residing in the sanctuary, efforts are underway to create a conducive environment for them, including marshy areas and grasslands. The sloth bear safari is also being promoted as part of the sanctuary's attractions.

Jaisamand Sanctuary have two safari tracks, stretching 14 and 22 kilometers, with safaris running from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning and 4:00 to 7:00 in the evening. Presently, the sanctuary offers jeep safaris exclusively. Plans are also in place to develop a leopard reserve in Amarkhaji, spanning 5000 hectares, promising future jeep safari experiences.
