Kumbhalgarh - Rajasthan's Fourth Tiger Reserve? Feasibility to be assessed by National Tiger Conservation Committee
National Tiger Conservation Committee has set up a special committee to assess the feasibility of declaring Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary a Tiger Reserve. Decision in 30 days.
The other Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan are at Sariska near Alwar, Ranthambore National Park near Sawai Madhopur and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Kota.
An expert committee has been formed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority to explore the possibilities of declaring the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve. The other Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan are at Sariska near Alwar, Ranthambore National Park near Sawai Madhopur and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Kota.
Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Deputy Inspector of NCTA has constituted a committee of four people under the guidelines of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. This action has been initiated after Rajsamand MP Princess Diya Kumari sent an official request letter to the Lok Sabha.
The team will include Retired IFS RN Mehrotra, Retired IFS NK Vasu and Indian Wildlife Institute scientist Dr. Kaushik Banerjee. Dr. Kaushik is currently with the Tiger Cell in the regional office of NTCA. Hemant Kamadi, Deputy Chief Inspector of Forests, NTCA Nagpur is the coordinator member of the committee. The committee has been given 30 days within which to prepare the detailed feasibility report in this context. The report will include details on all the areas within the sanctuary, status of human settlements in the area, Tiger friendly habitats, boundary, landscape connectivity, encroachment status, etc.
