Udaipur Sees Record Tourist Numbers in August
Udaipur experienced an unexpected surge in tourism in August. Despite challenges including a stabbing incident at a government school, a six-day internet shutdown, curfews, market closures, and booking cancellations, the city welcomed a record 157,000 tourists.
This figure represents a significant increase of 31,372 tourists from the 125,000 recorded in July. It is the fourth consecutive year that August tourism has surpassed 100,000 and the second consecutive year it has exceeded 150,000.
Domestic and International Tourists
Of the August visitors, 148,000 were domestic tourists and 9,192 were international tourists. The tourist season is set to begin with World Tourism Day on September 27 and will continue through March next year. The upcoming festival and wedding seasons from September to December are expected to attract even more visitors. The city’s full lakes are also drawing tourists.
Hotels are Fully Booked
Hotel operators report high demand for bookings during the Diwali season. Many reservations are already made at lakeside hotels, with limited availability remaining. Larger and five-star resorts are experiencing similar high demand.

In the first eight months of this year, Lake City has welcomed a total of 1,140,247 tourists. This includes 1,050,800 domestic tourists and 89,447 international tourists. The number of international tourists has exceeded 9,000 for the first time in four months this year.

Monsoon Season Impact
The city’s lakes, including Pichola, Swaroopsagar, Udaisagar, and the large lake, are all full. Fateh Sagar is nearing overflow due to the monsoon. These conditions are expected to further boost tourist numbers this month. Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, Shikha Saxena noted that efforts are underway to promote tourism during the monsoon season, highlighting tourist destinations and eco-tourism sites.
