Monsoon Retreats, Electricity Demand Rises

Shortage of electricity in Rajasthan as temperatures go up, surge seen rising by 25%

The monsoon has retreated from half of Rajasthan and with it the heat has started rising again. In total, sources say 19 cities recorded temperatures above 35°C.  This has led to an increase in demand for electricity in the state which is also witnessing unannounced power cuts in village areas. The surge has been seen rising by 25% while peak time demand is found reaching 1,600 MW. According to sources, 340 million units of electricity are being supplied daily.

In Jaisalmer and Bikaner, temperatures soared past 40°C on September 24. Similarly, in Barmer, Sriganganagar and Phalodi, the temperature hovered around 38°C.

Every summer, the state goes through a severe power crisis and rainfall fails to bring much respite from the heat. Electricity production and imports are found insufficient to take care of electricity consumption. Despite the presence of wind power plants, sufficient electricity is not generated. As a result, power cuts are being imposed on rural and small-town feeders.
