Lakecity Udaipur is not simply a lakecity. It has beautiful architectural structures in all corners. The first thing that comes to mind is City Palace. The City Palace of Udaipur is the largest of its type in Rajasthan. Built almost 400 years back, construction started by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1553 , the beautiful palace is located on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola. It has been built entirely in granite and marble. The interior has murals, wall paintings, glass work, silver work and also inlay work. The upper terrace provides a good view of the city.
There are 11 small palaces built inside this vast structure. All are interlinked by means of chowks and corridors. The structure of the buildings in the olden times was built keeping enemy attacks in mind. The corridors did not provide an easy escape to the enemy if at all he managed to enter the palace.
Within the palace are Suraj Gokhda, Mor chowk, Dilkhush mahal, Surya Chopad, Sheesh mahal, Moti mahal, Krishna Vilas, Bhim vilas, Shambhu niwas, Amar vilas, Fatehprakash palace and Shiv Niwas palace. The city palace has facilities like bank, travel office, post office and boutique shops. The complex belongs to the royal family of Mewar and is looked after by various trusts.
Tourists look at it with fascination because of the magnificence it holds. Also “Octopussy” a James Bond movie was shot here in the year 1983.
