Garuda – Jagdish temple Udaipur

There is a big statue of Garuda in the Jagdish temple in Udaipur. It is a bronze statue-half eagle and half man with big eyes. The folded hands mudra in which the Garuda is seen is strikingly beautiful though some people also find it scary because of big eyes. The statue seems to be placed in the form of a guard to Lord Vishnu.

A divine bird, depicted as the mount of Lord Vishnu, Garuda has been depicted in Indian mythology as extremely massive. It was big enough to block the sun. It has been stated as an enemy of the Nagas(snakes) since ancient times. It used to feed on snakes. Even in Ramayana, we get a description of Garuda dev being summoned to free Ram, Lakshman and the entire vaanar sena from the lasso known as Naag paash. It has also been stated that worshipping the Garuda removes snake poison from the body. One of the five faces of Panchmukhi Hanuman is Garuda. It is also said that the Garudas and The Nagas were cousins born from two sisters married to Rishi Kashyap.

The other main part of the temple is the striking 4 arm statue of Lord Vishnu made from a single piece of black stone.
