Protest and aggression has disrupted the peace of Udaipur during the past 3 days. This aggresive public opposition initially began due to the update of an abusive graphical image of the Islamic pilgrimage site on a social networking site Facebook.

Facebook was a mere social networking site few years back but now it’s a second home to many millions of people. An increasing number of internet users spend a good part of their days on Facebook and if Facebook was a country it would have been the 3^rd largest with 500 million netizens.

The sheer purpose of Facebook was to present one world to all, where people could connect, share and voice their opinion to all, minus the physical boundaries of nations and mark my words Facebook has done far beyond its purpose.

It gives us platform to make friends or find old friends, contacts and new business deals, share stuff, comment on it and a lot more. All sorts of profiles of Individuals, groups, socialists, anti-socialists, business, news, political, extremists, celebrities and even human trafficking pages could be found there.

But the question is, to what extent we should allow this virtual world to influence our real world? How are the users supposed to react on Facebook activities? Are all FB actions worth a reaction?

Taking the recent FB update initiated case of unrest in Udaipur as an example, it was expected for the Muslim Community to give out a strong reaction and I am sure, had this happened with any other community the reaction would have come out similarly strong.

But just think of what difference would have been there if there was a sophisticated link between cybercrime cell and Facebook authorities?

Loophole is in lack of coordination between state’s authority and Facebook itself. At one side where Indian Cyber Crime laws are too frail, Facebook.com also takes such issues lightly, in very few incidences they delete or ban such content and user or they just avoid it. (They need to control 500 million accounts daily)

If there would be a refined cybercrime desk in every city which also has equal coordination with every social networking site then this case could be solved easily and peacefully. The complainant has to lodge his objection of abusive content to cyber-crime officials and they will contact Facebook (obviously, Facebook too needs specially appointed people to coordinate with police) authorities to solve the case.

It’s just one case that I have talked about; there have been many and there is a lot more to come.

The best alternative to avoid such type of nuisance on Facebook is to ignore these updates. But, there comes a time when things go out of control and action is needed. At such times it is expected of us, the users to act with maturity and have the ability to think rationally and decide what action is required to be taken and in what conditions.

Facebook is a mere tool, it is on us how to use it.
