Which India is yours?

Which India is yours?

Before you get annoyed and fire off a jingoistic missive, ask yourself this question- Which India is the one to which I am proud to be heir? Is it the India full of generous, loving people who cherish friends and family or the India of those very people who care not about the families and friends of others?

Which India is yours?

Before you get annoyed and fire off a jingoistic missive, ask yourself this question- Which India is the one to which I am proud to be heir?  Is it the India full of generous, loving people who cherish friends and family or the India of those very people who care not about the families and friends of others?

Is it the India of art, music, letters, debate, and thought or the India of car advertisements, Bollywood royalty, tax evasion, and domestic abuse?

Is your India a poetic one or a cacophonic one?  Is yours the India of local brilliance or massive institutional failure?  Is your India the one in which we enjoy such a diverse array of amazing foods or the one in which hundreds of millions of people eat less food than they did before liberalization?

Is your India the one in which we refer to women with respect of the one in which a rash of rapes plagues our “vibrant” urban centers?  Is it the India that produces lakhs of engineers or the India that tops the world in traffic fatalities, child abuse, and farmer suicides?

Well the fact is that all of these are ALL your India, my India, and everyone’s India.  And that is the real issue- that cherry-picking what we see and are willing to admit is a bad habit we’ve all developed.  It’s a product of intellectual laziness and unwarranted pride.

The only way to do right by this is to make our collective India better
