In a major crackdown, Udaipur Police busted a fraud call centre running opposite BN College and arrested 24 people in the case.
Bhupalpura Police Station team received information about the fraud call centre and raided the same on Sunday. While Police managed to arrest 24 people, 3 of the company founders and some female employees are still at large. Police has recovered 50 computers, 27 mobile phones and ID proofs of 7 people from the place.
SHO Rajesh Yadav informed that the call centre employees used to call up American people and introduced themselves as being from the Social Security Administration department. The employees then told the American people that their tax was due and by threatening them with arrest or any other legal action, used to coax them to giving dollars via gift vouchers. Every week, one call centre employee would fraudulently generate almost Rs 1 Lakh from the American individual.
Interestingly, all the arrested people have studied only upto 8th or 10th grades. The arrested people belong to Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, Punjab and Delhi.
Arrested people informed that a pdf form on computer screen used to have a 15 line script. As soon as an American individual used to pick up the phone, the fraudulent caller would start speaking as per the script. They used to tell their own names as John, Donald, Alexander or similar American names. They then told the American individual that tax was due on their Social Security Card and that they would be arrested if they did not pay the due. When the American requested to be saved in the case, the fraudulent caller would ask him to purchase a mall gift card varying from $100 to $1000. They then passed the gift card number to their fraudulent counterpart sitting in America who would collect the Dollar amount and repatriate here.
Each caller was paid Rs 13000 to Rs 20000 per month. The callers would serve in shift from 7pm to 5 am.
