Dawoodi Bohra community celebrated the Islamic New Year’s Eve today by conducting celebration feast and exchanged greetings with each other. The night will mark the first month (Moharram) of Islamic Calendar.
Bohras are known for their close social ties and prefer celebrating every occasion through social gathering. On the eve of Islamic New Year, a special food preparation is done in every house and all family members sit together circling around a big plate (thaal).
The month of Moharram also has major significance to the Battle of Karbala which was fought between Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad and Ummayad Ruler Yazid.
Though celebration continues for only first day of Muharram as from second day till the 10th of Muharram, Dawoodi Bohras commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions.
Several UT readers from Bohra community shared their special Thaal decorated with varieties of food and sweets. Here we are sharing some of the pictures shared by our readers in India and other parts of the world.
