Ever since Social Networking has intellectually transformed into Social Media, things have completely evolved about the way we think, react and share our thoughts publicly. Lately, a new trend of “Secret Confessions” is gaining heights on Facebook with loads of young users sharing secrets of their lives through various Facebook community pages.

In a small city like Udaipur where proposing a girl was once considered to be the most daring task, it has now became so simple through a Facebook page ‘Udaipur Proposal’. Not only boys, girls also propose guys through this 21^st century tool where technology and emotions conglomerate well to share and express one’s thoughts.

Besides online proposing, Confession Pages of particular schools of Udaipur are also gaining ground with thousands of students of the city of lakes. Both current students as well as Alumni are actively participating in sharing their school-time-secrets (mostly anonymously).

However, as confession is defined as a declaration of something secret; it is a known fact that secrets are not always easily digestible.

The confessions are posted through filling a form on Google Docs which is directly received by the Community Administrator. Google Docs is used as the source of generating confessions, as they keep the identity secret and establish a clandestine interaction.

One of the page Administrators said under condition of Anonymity, “We never know the details of the confession sender, as we use a Google Docs form to completely hide the identity of the sender”.

While most of the confessions put a smile on your face remembering those early teenage days, few also sound potentially abusive and insulting when the person posting the confession discloses the identity of the other person (either a classmate, schoolmate or a teacher) whom he/she is pointing to in the statement or confession.

Such statements mostly display personal hostility, jealously and hatred. In some extreme cases, confessions are also sexually and physically provoked.

Another major problem with such pages is that neither can one authenticate the details of the end user who posted the confession, nor can the page owner /administrator be identified.

This might cause an alarming situation for schools and educational organizations and also their employees, if students start using Social Media to promote their freedom of expression and speech to this level where teachers might feel embarrassed in a public forum by secret confessions of students.

School Confession pages of Udaipur include that of Central Academy, St. Paul’s and St Mary’s Schools.

Central Academy has 1000+ Likes, while St. Paul’s and St Mary’s have 600+ Likes which are increasing day by day.

On contacting one school, UT was told that they have no idea of such online activity going on and would look forward to know if it can affect the organization or any individual.
