Rajasthan is experiencing a rise in QR code phishing crimes. Cybercriminals are using QR codes to empty bank accounts and steal personal information. This new trend has left many residents at risk of financial loss and identity theft.

Scammers are embedding malicious links into QR codes. When scanned, these codes direct users to fake websites that mimic legitimate e-commerce, advertising, or restaurant sites. These counterfeit sites are designed to trick users into entering sensitive information like UPI PINs or OTPs.

Since 2023, around 2 crore users have been affected by QR code phishing. Last year alone, there were over 30,000 complaints, and the number has surged to over 80,000 complaints in 2024.

Cyber expert Gajendra Sharma advised that when scanning a QR code, you should always verify the URL to ensure it is genuine. Hackers often create domain names that mimic real URLs but may contain subtle errors or incorrect letters that users might overlook. Additionally, many apps downloaded via QR codes can make phone hacking more accessible.

To protect yourself, be cautious when scanning QR codes, especially if they ask for personal details or payment information. Always verify the source before providing any information.
