Rise of ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam: Simple Steps to Stay Safe Online

PM Modi warns public against this cyber scam in Mann Ki Baat

Digital Arrest Scam

Cybercriminals have increasingly used impersonation tactics to deceive victims, including posing as law enforcement officers. This approach typically involves scammers contacting individuals, pretending to be police or other legal authorities, and claiming the person is involved in legal trouble or a critical investigation. They might demand sensitive information, payments, or other compliance under the threat of "legal consequences."

In his latest Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned the public about a growing cyber scam called “Digital Arrest.” He urged citizens to be alert and shared easy safety steps to protect against these types of scams.

Safety Tips from PM Modi

  • Stay Calm: Do not give out personal information immediately.
  • Verify Legitimacy: Real government agencies do not conduct inquiries over calls or demand money over the phone.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a scam, report it to the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in.

Spread Awareness

He also encouraged citizens to spread awareness by sharing their own experiences and urged schools and colleges to engage students in cyber safety campaigns using the hashtag #SafeDigitalIndia.

How Does the ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam Work?

  • Cyber experts explain that the Digital Arrest scam has a clear pattern. According to 14C’s CEO, Rajesh Kumar, here’s how it typically operates:
  • Targeted Victims: Scammers gather detailed personal information on potential victims to appear more convincing.
  • Impersonation: Scammers pretend to be officials from agencies like the police or CBI. They even use fake uniforms and staged settings to look official.
  • Fear Tactics: Victims are pressured to act fast, with threats of immediate arrest unless they pay a fee.
  • Spoofed Numbers: Scammers use fake numbers and email addresses that seem real. They often demand personal data or payment through untraceable methods like cryptocurrency or gift cards.
