Ever heard of a school that doesn’t close down at all? A school in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra runs all 365 days a year.
This Jila Parishad Primary school is a very small school in Hingevasti (Vaijapur) having 29 students and 2 teachers, yet not a single day has it closed. Classes go on during the day and night where children attend day school and come with parents during the night. This routine has been going on since the last 6 years.
The credit for this goes to the teacher Sanjay Gaekwad. As per Sanjay, “I came to this place on a transfer almost 7 years back. I used to come here with my laptop, which made the children very curious. They had never ever heard about computers, forget about seeing one. Their school didn’t have a single computer. So instead of getting into the legal process, I spoke to the villagers. With the help of all other villagers, I collected around Rs. 4.5 lakh and brought computers and other facilities to their school. From 9:30AM . to 4PM. regular classes are held as per the schedule. Thereafter, from 6PM till 9PM, we hold Computer classes”.
“Earlier only the children were learning computers, but later on their fathers also started coming regularly. Then these fathers also started learning English and Mathematics.” Administrative officers confirm that the school runs all 365 days and it is not inappropriate in any way since the entire village is getting educated and computer knowledge is a must for everyone.
This school is the first ISO certified basti school. In the category of schools in a basti, this is the first school in Maharashtra that has been given ISO 9001:2008 certificate.
