Bhagwad Gita to be made a part of School Curriculum?

Director, Secondary Education, has issued a directive to all District Education Officers of the State to implement knowledge dissemination of the Bhagwad Gita to all students in Government Schools of the State.

This decision has been communicated inspite of the controversy surrounding the proposal to implement Surya Namaskar and chanting of “Aum” by children in schools as compulsory.

Bl Swarnkar, Director, Secondary Education has asked all DEOs to ensure that the 13,000 Government Schools in the State ensure that Bhagwad Gita is a part of the curriculum and a copy is made available to all schools free of cost.

As per the Director, this decision has been taken to ensure that moral and spiritual knowledge is inculcated in students.  Nothing concrete has been said about making the Gita dissemination compulsory though.

On the other hand, retired Deputy Director of Secondary Education, Bhupendra Jain has a different opinion.  He says that during his tenure, no such order regarding making a religious scripture mandatory in school curriculum was proposed.  He said that no child should be compelled to read a particular scripture relevant to a particular religion, as the children are from diverse religious backgrounds.
