3 day workshop on Contact Improvisation – a Dance form

A Contact Improvisation workshop is being organised at Swaraj University in Udaipur.  Titled Sensing Through Presence, the workshop will focus on both, creating a ground for contact improvisation skills and qualities of sensing though somatic methods, and awaking awareness through heightening the senses.  The workshop will see expert participation by Hari Choudhary, Guru Suraj and Aditya Sasidharan.

What is Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation is an open-ended exploration of the kinaesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all bodies and enquiring minds.

The improvised dance form is based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion—gravity, momentum, inertia. The body, in order to open to these sensations, learns to release excess muscular tension and abandon a certain quality of willfulness to experience the natural flow of movement. Bringing forth a physical/emotional truth about a shared moment of movement that leaves the participants informed, centered, and enlivened.

CI is a versatile form of movement, now practiced all over the world as an awareness practice, an art and dance form, sometimes a sport, a social/ recreation activity and much more.

A unique way to develop the physical principles of CI

Through the workshop, practitioners will look at very basic principles of CI, as “rolling point of contact”, support, following & leading, falling, use of momentum, sink and suspension. Backspace, counterbalancing, in & out of contact .

The workshop will also have space for self-directed learning, writing, talks & sharings, exploring questions and having discussions on different themes – Bodywork and anatomy.

Basically its a lot of fun- playing and exploring the possibilities of two bodies in a space in terms of the physical laws of Gravity, force, momentum and sharing weight. It involves a lot listening and being aware of the body and the surroundings and at the same time the improvisation aspect of the form keeps it like a play full of curiosity going into the unknown territory in every moment.

Indian dancers/artists are invited to apply for this program, with reduced price as an exchange of content writer or documentary artist.
