MMCF Consultant Dr Shikha Jain gives Lecture in Mumbai

On May 5, 2016 Dr. Shikha Jain, Consultant – MMCF and Director – Dronah gave a lecture on The City Palace Museum, Udaipur about the Conservation Master Plan and its phased implementation.
More than 100 people attended the talk at the auditorium of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), Mumbai formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India. The audience included architects, conservators, students and scholars jointly invited by CSMVS and The Museum Society of Bombay.
Ms. Pheroza Godrej, Ms. Brinda Somaya, Ms. Deepika Sorabjee, Ms. Shreya Sarda, Ms. Veronique Polès, Mr. Amitesh Banerjee and Ms. Gayatri Banerjee were some other eminent also present at the talk. Ms. Vrinda Raje Singh, CEO – JCI represented Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), Udaipur at the event.
Mr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Director, CSMVS introduced Dr. Shikha Jain and Ms. Vrinda Raje Singh who were also felicitated by eminent historian Ms. Devangana Desai.
Dr. Jain gave a very comprehensive talk highlighting the unique challenges faced while preparing the conservation master plan and the phased implementation works thereafter. She highlighted how the local mindset, sentiments were important for the plan. Udaipur is one of the most unique heritage in India will little influence of the outside world, keeping the almost true Rajput style architecture intact.
She said that the conservation philosophy for The City Palace, Udaipur goes beyond mere technical restoration, to encompass the social and the natural realms. It aims to conserve the built heritage in its entirety, along with its geographical and socio cultural morphology. The City Palace Museum is a living heritage site, an embodiment of the social and ritual traditions of Mewar region since centuries. Hence, the conservation and museum polices integrate the continuity of socio-cultural values since centuries. The built spaces and specific arti facts are still strongly associated with Mewar rituals and often used in the annual festivals and rituals by The Mewar Family.
The City Palace Museum is the only museum keeping with contemporary times with its usage of spaces give an experience of a living historic site and very unique museum collections under a single ownership that show continuity in practice since centuries of one of the oldest dynasty in this world (Sisodia Rajputs).
The hour long talk was received very positively generating a new interest in Udaipur, Rajasthan among all present who complimented the work done at the City Palace Museum, Udaipur.
