Moharram 1442H | Dawoodi Bohra community observes Martyrdom of Imam Hussain in stifled tranquility

There was something missing. Hence, I thought of preparing a Sabeel in the name of Maula Hussain and serve water and sharbet to my friends and family just like we did in our Mohallas in Udaipur and then at our Masjid in Mumbai. I also wanted to teach my kids what Moharram and Azadari is all about.

Moharram 1442H | Dawoodi Bohra community observes Martyrdom of Imam Hussain in stifled tranquility

The 10th day of Moharram was observed on 28 August by the Dawoodi Bohra community in Udaipur and elsewhere, with silent and tranquil moments in the solitude of their homes. The first 10 days of Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar are devoted to Imam Hussain and his followers who laid down their lives in Karbala, for the sake of and in the honor of Islam.

People of the community stayed indoors and took part in the live sermons from the confines of their homes, in what otherwise is a full fledged community event that takes place in the masjids across Udaipur and elsewhere.

Taking into cognizance the COVID regulations, the regular majalis (congregation) in the masjids and community centers was prohibited across all faiths this year. The Dawoodi Bohra community also ensured that social protocol was followed and the vaiz (sermon) was telecast live on YouTube.

All through the first 10 days of Moharram, the members of the Dawoodi Bohra community in Udaipur took part in the live broadcast of the Vaiz from the confines of their homes, offices and shops in the day time and from their homes during the evening and late night hours.

Mulla Peer Ali of the Bohra Youth community performed the sermons on all the 10 days, supported by Asrar Ahmed Jawriyawala, Muzammil-Muzahir and their group, who recited the Noha across the 10 days.

Likewise, all through the 10 days, Sabeel are setup in closed community areas in Udaipur, Mumbai, etc and these Sabeel serve water and juices as well as eatables to everyone who visit the Sabeel. This time however, people of the community took the opportunity by setting up Sabeel at their homes, to observe the gist of Moharram and the martyrdom at Karbala.

"I never expected that Moharram will be observed like this – so had been feeling a bit low. There was something missing. Hence, I thought of preparing a Sabeel in the name of Maula Hussain and serve water and sharbet to my friends and family just like we used to do in our Mohallas in Udaipur and now do in our Masjid at Mumbai. I also wanted to teach my kids what Moharram and Azadari is all about. My 8 year old daughter is still taking care of Sabeel and fills the pot once it is empty. I did this for inner peace and satisfaction" - Rehana Hussain, Mumbai

In Udaipur, the live broadcast was supported by the local television channels so that each and everyone could take part in the sermons from the confines of their homes. This protocol was maintained by the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat in Udaipur and was also adhered to by the Dawoodi Bohra Shia’a on the instructions of the Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

The Alam procession, which takes place on the 10th day in Bohrawadi and is organised by the Bohra Youth group, was also not taken out this year in keeping with the protocols and restrictions imposed by the district Collector. The sermon and marsiya khwaani on Ashoora was also done with limited number of people in the masjid and was telecast live.  Mudassar Ali performed the Shab-e-Ghareeba bayan on 10th Moharram from the Vajihpura Masjid.
