On the propitious occasion of Sharad Purnima, devotees performed Maha-Aarti on the shore of Lake Fateh Sagar today evening, and distributed the Prasad of “kheer”, a traditional Indian dessert.

On the propitious occasion of Sharad Purnima, devotees performed Maha-Aarti on the shore of Lake Fateh Sagar today evening, and distributed “kheer”, a traditional Indian dessert, as prasad.

On Sharad Purnima, when the moon is at its brightest best, it is believed the rays of the moon carries nectar and that is why “kheer” is prepared in the evening and exposed to the moonlight and then taken as Prasad.

According to the customs, some people also try to thread a needle in the moonlight to test their eyesight. It is believed that on this auspicious night, Lord Krishna played ‘raasleela’ with ‘Gopis’, the female friends of Lord Krishna.

The day also marks the beginning of the holy month of Kartik.

A religious group “Jai Hanuman Ramcharit Manas Prachar Samiti Trust” organized the day long program, comprising of ‘Sundar Kand’ and ‘Maha Aarti’.

Founder of the trust, Satya Narayan Choubisa informed that the program started at 7 in the evening; many prominent personalities were invited on the occasion. District Congress President (Rural) Lal Singh Jhala and Rahul Agrawal of Pacific College were present and joined the prayer ceremony.
