Aquatic Weed Spread in Fateh Sagar Lake Raising Concerns

Immediate measures are required to restore the lake's health; declining water level in Fateh Sagar lake

Udaipur, January 28, 2025 - The declining water level in Udaipur's Fateh Sagar Lake is causing a rapid spread of aquatic vegetation and algae in the upper pond area. This has become a significant concern as the dense weed growth is blocking sunlight from reaching the water below. The lack of sunlight hampers the natural process of photosynthesis, leading to a reduction in dissolved oxygen levels in the water.

The shortage of dissolved oxygen is having a negative impact on the aquatic ecosystem. Fish and other aquatic organisms are struggling to survive in these conditions. Additionally, the quality of the lake water is deteriorating, which could lead to further ecological imbalances.

Tej Shankar Paliwal, a former member of the Lake Development Authority, has highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue. He has urged the UDA to act promptly by deploying workers to clean the lake and remove the weeds. According to him, the decaying weeds not only pollute the water but also release harmful substances that worsen the lake’s condition.

The spread of aquatic weeds and algae is not just an environmental concern but also poses a threat to the lake's appeal as a popular tourist destination. Immediate measures are required to restore the lake's health and preserve its ecological balance.
