Interglacial Era, around 100,000 years ago, when the sea levels were 6-9 meters (20-30ft) higher than today witnessed temperatures that are being seen today – a result of Global warming.
As per paper submitted by James Hansen, a former NASA climate scientist along with other researchers, the temperatures in 2016 will likely be 1.25 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial era. The warming trend has seen the world heating up at a rate of 0.18C per decade over the past 45 years.
Rate of warming is gradually taking temperatures on the planet in line with those last seen during Eemian period, an era that ended 115,000 years ago, when sea levels were higher as ice was much less than today.
Daunting technological advances, which are expected to cost coming generations hundreds of trillions of dollars, will be needed as per scientists, to control temperatures.
