Udaipur Tribe: Having a child compulsory before marriage

India is a land of diversity. At one end we have communities that do not allow communication between boy and girl before marriage. But at the other extreme, we have a tribe where it is necessary for the girl and boy to have a kid together before they can marry!

The tribe is called Garasia. This tribe is found in Rajasthan in and around Udaipur district. It is important for the boy and girl to have a kid together before they can be formally married. The boy and girl can stay away from family before marriage with the partner of their choice. They get permission to marry after they have had a kid together.

In case there is no kid born out of the relationship, the boy and girl are free to change partners.

Members of this tribe speak Gujarati, Bhili, Mewari and Marwari languages.
