China’s decision to build a dam on the Brahmaputra River

Udaipur, January 8, 2025: On January 6, 2025, China reiterated the strategic plan of constructing the world’s biggest dam on the Brahmaputra River near the India Border in Tibet. China, while explaining this plan, stated that the project that has been planned has gone through significant and rigorous scientific verifications. China also stated that this project will not have any negative impact on countries like Bangladesh and India.

China stated that the overall estimated cost that can be allocated to this project includes approximately 137 billion as the river is significantly located in the Geographically fragile locations which is situated in the Himalayas where the tectonic plates may get triggered significantly. However, this project may increase the level and rate of earthquakes. China has made its position clear and stated that this project will not hamper any country but will help save the countries from any type of disaster.

However, despite the current statement of China, it can be seen that India has expressed its significant concerns regarding the issues that may develop from the construction of the dam. Last month, China approved plans to develop the dam on the Brahmaputra River, which is also known as the Yarlung Zangbo on their side of the border. Due to the first reaction, India urged China to make sure that the interests of the Brahmaputra River were not hampered in any way. India also told China that the country will look after its interests and will take measures if the interests are harmed in any way. Further, it can also be analysed that India urged that user rights should be maintained.

These terms and conditions have been iterated along with the consultation and permission of Indian officials before taking any steps.
