NHAI plans to integrate roadside facilities into the layout of upcoming access-controlled highways to enhance the overall travel experience. As per the current plan, these facilities might involve areas designated for drone landings, helipad construction, and retail stores selling locally made handicrafts and fresh farm produce.
Media report indicates that NHAI plans to set up 1,000 wayside amenities over the next five years, with one amenity located every 50 km along national highways. This target is higher than the previously envisioned 600 amenities, which were planned in collaboration with the private sector.
As per a senior government official, 800 of these amenities will be set up under public-private partnerships (PPP). NHAI will supply the land and necessary permits, oversee the project, and the private partner will handle the development, operations, and maintenance of the facility for a period ranging from 15 to 30 years.
Facilities exceeding five acres will be designed as highway villages, while those under five acres will be developed as highway nests. Historically, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have provided essential services at fuel stations located along highways nationwide.
As wayside amenities are integrated into the overall planning of expressways, land acquisition for these facilities will be coordinated concurrently with highway development. Experts suggest that the government needs to increase its operations to encourage positive reactions from private operators.
