The food regulator FSSAI has directed airlines and flight caterers to comply with its food safety regulations, ensuring thorough and detailed labeling of all items served to passengers. The FSSAI has called on airlines to ensure that prepared food served on flights is accurately labeled with crucial information.

This directive aims to enhance transparency by furnishing passengers with comprehensive information regarding the nature, origin, and manufacturing specifics of the food served during flights. Two months ago, FSSAI contacted airlines regarding similar issues following complaints about worms found in food served during a domestic flight. Recently, FSSAI issued a showcause notice to an airline after a passenger reported finding worms in her sandwich during a flight.  Additionally, Air India found a metal blade in a meal served on one of its flights.

The food regulatory body held a meeting with airline officials and subsequently delivered a letter to them. During the meeting, FSSAI highlighted the significance of airlines addressing consumer complaints promptly and advised airline caterers to implement efficient systems for quick resolution, including measures to prevent and correct food safety issues. During the discussion, there was a strong focus on the importance of customized training programs for catering staff to ensure they have a thorough understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
