The changed monsoon cycle for Udaipur over the last 6 years has repeated itself once again, with the last week of August bringing rain to the parched lakes of Udaipur. As we enter September, the rains continue and on 3 September very heavy rains with thunderstorms overnight and till late morning, ensured that the fresh water reservoirs of Udaipur have something to cheer about.
The Gates of Swaroop Sagar were opened late in the morning on 3 Sept after the Swaroop Sagar gate level reached its maximum 11ft.. Sisarma, which flows from the cachement areas of Aar and Rayta across Popelti and into Pichhola is at 15ft and filling fast. The water is flowing swiftly into Pichhola Lake. Meanwhile, both the Bada Madar lake and Chhota Madar lake have overflowed significantly.
Earlier in the afternoon today, the overflow gates of Udaisagar were opened to 4ft. The gates were opened when the level crossed 24ft. The Badha Madar and Chhota Madar lakes have also overflowed during the weekend, bringing in plenty of water to Udaisagar through the Ayad River.
The authorities have issued their warnings to the public to stay away from the areas that have flowing water as most of the dam gates have been opened and water is flowing at a great speed. Even the presence of animals needs to be avoided in these areas and they need to be safeguarded.
