This information has been conveyed by the Indian Railways recruitment website.

Recruitment notifications from the Indian Railway Board usually follow a systematic grouping approach. Positions within the railway department are divided into two principal categories: Gazetted positions, which encompass Group 'A' and 'B' posts, and Non-Gazetted roles, which include Group 'C' and 'D' posts. Herein, we delineate the various positions and furnish educational qualification requirements for each respective group.

  • Group A positions are typically filled through various examinations conducted by the UPSC, which include the Civil Service Exam, Engineering Service Exam, and Combined Medical Service Examination.
  • Group B positions consist of Section Officers Grade, which are elevated roles from Group 'C' railway employees through a deputation process.
  • Group C positions typically encompass a variety of roles such as Station Master, Ticket Collector, Clerk, Commercial Apprentice, Safety staff, Traffic Apprentice, and various Engineering posts (including Electrical, Signal & Telecommunication, Civil, and Mechanical disciplines).
  • Group D positions consist of a range of roles including Track-man, Helper, Assistant Points Man, Safaiwala / Safaiwali, Gunman, Peon, as well as various positions within different cells and boards of the railway department.
