Jagdish Temple, located in the heart of Old City area of Udaipur, Rajasthan has been in talks for quite a few days now. Priests of the temple are complaining about the temple’s maintenance work. Temple priests said that due to the Devasthan Department negligence the temple’s condition is becoming worse. However, a few days ago it was declared that the renovation work will start soon as the Devasthan Department has written a letter to the Indian National Trust of Art Culture and Heritage requesting for the redemption of the temple.
Jagdish Temple is a renowned place in the city of Udaipur. Every year lakhs of tourists visit the temple. Also main events like Krishna Janmashtami, Nirjala Ekadashi and Patotsav are held in the temple. According to the media reports, from the last 40-50 years, the Devasthan Department has not taken care of the temple in any way. The department visits only once in a year to open the vault kept in the temple. Also, the temple priests claim that ornaments in the temple have completely broken and this has been informed to the Devasthan Department in writing several times.
“The priests of Jagdish Temple have not come to the Devasthan Department regarding any problem. It is not known what allegations they are making. We can tell about this matter only after receiving the complaint. A budget of Rs. 70 lakh has been given to the Archaeological Department for the renovation of the temple. Its work order has also been issued.” - Jatin Gandhi, Assistant Commissioner, Devasthan Department, Udaipur.
The Archaeological Department on Friday 5 May, 2023, issued a work order for the renovation at Rs 70 lakh. The parts of the temple will be renovated such as the growing bushes at the peak of the temple will be removed as well as fixing of stones.
