Freeing 6000 prisoners in Myanmar: Is it a great move?

The military government of Myanmar has, earlier this month, decided to release approximately 6000 prisoners and significantly reduced the sentence of few other inmates as a part of the mass amnesty program. This is a sign of showing independence from Britain. However, this didn’t ensure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi who is on a 79 year sentence. She is serving her 27 years of sentence in captivity.

It has been reported that the head of the military government granted the discharge and amnesty covering around 5,864 people along with the 180 foreigners who can be deported.

However, there are terms of release, which include the fact that if the detainee who is freed violates the law again, they will have to serve their remaining sentence in jail. Last year, it was 9000 prisoners who were freed.

Myanmar’s military chief stated in his speech that the ethnic minority groups are calling upon the military rule, however, it will be put down through the use of peaceful means. It has been seen that the Military rule ordered the release of the compassionate and humanitarian grounds and said that it would commute the sentence of around 144 prisoners.
