In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India issued a stay on the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the 'Modi surname case' from 2019. The decision led to jubilant celebrations at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi, with party workers proudly displaying banners of Gandhi and expressing their joy. The 'Modi surname case' refers to a legal matter in which Rahul Gandhi had faced charges related to his remarks on politicians using the surname "Modi." With the Supreme Court's stay on his conviction, the case takes a new turn, allowing Gandhi some relief from the legal proceedings. The decision has brought considerable enthusiasm among the Congress party members and supporters at the AICC headquarters, marking a moment of significance for Rahul Gandhi's political journey.

Following his conviction by the Surat court and the subsequent two-year sentence, Rahul Gandhi decided to challenge the verdict by filing an appeal at the Gujarat High Court. However, on July 7, the Gujarat High Court made a significant ruling by declining to stay his conviction. Undeterred, Gandhi further pursued legal recourse and approached the Supreme Court in a bid to seek relief from the conviction. The matter is now under the consideration of the apex court, which will play a crucial role in determining the final outcome of the case.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi, who was the petitioner in the case against Rahul Gandhi for his remarks, expressed his respect for the decision made by the Supreme Court. However, he asserted his determination to persist with the legal battle concerning the matter. Despite the apex court's decision, Purnesh Modi remains committed to pursuing the case through the judicial process.

The party welcomed the apex court's move, hailing the judgment as a robust vindication of truth and emphasizing that "no force can stifle the voice of the people."

“Despite the relentless efforts of the BJP's machinery, Rahul Gandhi has refused to bend, break, or bow, choosing instead to place his faith in the judicial process,” Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said, “We are very excited and happy because the lion will once again roar in the Parliament. Now, without any further delay, the Speaker should revoke the decision.”
