When every expression becomes tribute to an art, it is then an artist is born and Rajasthan, a land of mystery, which unfolds many truths hidden in layers of history, is richly endowed with many such artists. Choyal Family of Udaipur is one such golden strand in veil of cultural richness. The senior most artist of this family is P.N.Choyal who has glorified this land by his outstanding creations. It is our pleasure to introduce you such a talented clan of artists from Udaipur.

P.N.Choyal is a renowned, senior contemporary artist from Udaipur who has marked his presence in the world of contemporary art by his imaginative and artistic depictions. He was born on January 5, 1924 and since 1948, pursuing profession of painting seriously.  He spent two years at the Slade College of Arts in London in 1961-62, soon after earning his bachelor’s course at Jaipur School of Arts and Sir J.J. School of Art Mumbai.

P.N.Choyal has timely reformed his style with lots of innovations and motivations in his life. Choyal has earned numerous awards including the prestigious National Award (Lalit Kala Akademi, ’98),  Kala Ratna Award-2007( highest honour in Contemporary Indian Art for a life time achievement). He has been a  forerunner of an artistic tradition that is being carried further by his son Shail, daughter-in-law Surjeet, grandson Akash and his wife Charul.

Shail Choyal is a painter, printmaker and a teacher is widely known for his miniature art style.  Shail Choyal was born on November 9, 1945.  He studied painting at the Udaipur University, and followed  with a Diploma from Jaipur School of Art.  He studied graphics in London on a sponsored  British Council Program. He has widely traveled to European countries in the east and west and exhibited  his art throughout the globe.

Shail has received innumerable awards and honors, to name a few Gold Medal for his Master’s Degree  (1969),  3 Rajasthan Lalit Kala award for printmaking and painting, 3 Bombay Art Society Award for Painting (1971) ,  President of India Award by AIFACS, New Delhi, National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1982) and ADOGI international award in Barcelona, Spain.

Surjeet Kaur Choyal wife of Shail Choyal, is a dedicated painter, she loves to portray Rajasthani feudal rulers depicting royal richness and manner. She was born on September 24, 1948 and after completing her M.A.(painting) in 1969 she studied at M.S. Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda as a Non-Collegiate student.  She also attended Rajasthani Fresco course at Banasthali Vidyapeeth.

Her series on Rajasthani women illustrates undefined emotions. She with her unique array of paintings is wonderfully carrying Choyal’s family reputation.

Surjeet received Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademy award in 1970, Mahakaushal Kala Parishasd award in 1985, All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in 1990 and the list continues with other laurels.

Akash Choyal paints his own world of mind playing with the spoken and unspoken truths of life. He  is another gifted artist from land of Rajasthan. Akash was born on February 2, 1974. He did his Bachelor of fine arts from Faculty of Fine arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodra in 1997 and Master of Fine Arts, College of Art, New Delh in 1999.

In his graphical approach and peculiar style, he fathoms underlying layers of day-to-day minute things, may it be human, trees, animals or heavenly bodies!! He has worked on different mediums like plaster reliefs, fiber constructions, etchings, paintings, paper machie, paperboards etc.

He has taken part in different exhibitions worldwide and been awarded Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi in Printmaking (2001), National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi for Painting (2010).

Charul Laul (Choyal) Basically, a theatre artist, Charul, partner of Akash did her masters in Theater from Punjabi University. She has acted in innumerable plays and performed in several metro cities of India.

After marrying Akash, she got seriously involved in painting and persuaded the professional attire.

She has always believed in spiritual powers that govern the movement of human being and then the flower blossoms.
