Two brothers from Udaipur have designed a low cost sanitary pad making machine that they claim produces sanitary pads at 90 paise. This, they claim, is the lowest rate in the country.
The two brothers Abdul Kadir Khan (25) and Aleem Khan (22) are engineers by technical qualification. The brothers have been making the machine for last 3 years and finally cracked the formula for getting it down to Rs 0.9 per pad. Cost of each machine is Rs 1,00,000 and each machine can produce 1200 sanitary pads a day.
Kadir said that he faced financial constraints initially since there were no investors and he had to invest money from his salary for the project.
They operate their firm in the name of Shahnaz Enterprises, named after their mother. They manufacture machines for Govt departments, NGOs and for people who want to start their own business of producing sanitary pads. They have also set-up units in near by villages where women can get sanitary pads at cheap rates.
Governments of Uttarakhand and Bengal have already procured some of their machines.
Their next target is to come up with bio-degradable pads with seeds of different plants in them. When these pads are buried, they would be able to produce a plant in 45 days. While they have developed the concept, price of each such pad is coming at Rs 3 and they are targeting at bringing the cost down to Rs 1.5.
Bravo Padmen!
