Google tech team, in a recent blog post, said that in 2017 the team had taken down more than 250,000 impersonating apps. The tech team from Google Play, led by Andrew Ahn, Product Manager, has said that the team has taken down over 700,000 malicious apps from Play Store and delisted 100,000 app developers in 2017.
These Apps, which were found to be violating the Play Store policies, were either malicious in nature or were impersonating Apps. This number was 70% more than the number of Apps taken down from Play Store in 2016.
Google further said that 99% Apps with abusive contents were identified and rejected before anyone installed them. This was possible due to the new detection technologies that the company adopted, which included identifying repeat offenders and abusive developers on scale. The technology adopted works on new Machine Learning model and can identify impersonating Apps, those with malicious or inappropriate content or those with malware.
Google’s improved adaptive learning models can sift through massive amounts of App submissions, frisk them for inappropriate content such as pron, extreme violence, hate or illegal activities as well as impersonation.
Google Play Protect, launched in 2017 reduced the number of inappropriate Apps by more than 50%, the company said.Media Reports
