Udaipur City houses many handicraft wonders in itself attracting tourists from the country and abroad. Like the traditional Mojris we presented last week, this time Udaipurtimes is bringing to our readers Handmade Paper, Photo-Album, Leather & Silk Diaries. We visited Shiva Handicrafts near Laxmi Temple in Bhatiyani Chohatta. The Owner Mahendra Singh alias Babu was our host in this beautiful world of handmade diaries. He is in this business from past 6 years, prior to that he worked as a guide and has good command over Swedish, Hebrew and Dutch language. In his shop he sells Diaries, Photo Albums, Journals and Folders all purely handmade. He told us an astonishing fact that, the trend and manufacturing of all hand made Diaries and similar articles started only from Udaipur many years ago. With time it spread to other areas of the state and country. It is very difficult to know the exact year or time period when these were first shown to world. Till today all the diaries are manufactured by the same process as it was done since it started. Binding is done with extensive use of needle and thread without the use of any adhesive. Covers are either of leather or clothe with beautiful embroidery on the front. Sometimes pictures depicting Indian gods and goddesses are also used to cover these albums or diaries. It takes about One to One and Half Hour to prepare a diary while a Leather Album consumes 3 hours or more depends upon finesse to be rendered These diaries are mostly appreciated by Spanish tourists more than any other nationals visiting Udaipur/India. In European countries hand made articles are more appraised and appreciated over factory finished goods. It is an ideal gift item for all occasions. The price range varies from Rs.10/-. to hundreds or thousands depending upon the quality of Craftsmanship. Shops of such hand made diaries and other goods are well spread in the areas near City Palace and Jagdish Chowk.
