There is nothing new about the fact that unavoidable circumstances force people to cancel their travel plans. If the person in holding a confirmed ticket, it becomes difficult to cancel it. This also applies to train journeys. 

But now this needs to be noted that Indian Railways has had a facility which is known to almost none. The Indian Railways allow the passengers to transfer their confirmed tickets in another person’s name if they are unable to travel for any personal reason.           

A confirmed ticket can be transferred by a passenger to his family members including mother, father, sister, brother, wife, daughter and son. It is to be kept in mind that this is notified 24 hours prior to the journey. After the request is generated, the passenger’s name will be cut off and replaced by the name of the person to whom the ticket has been transferred to.

A government employee who is going on duty can transfer the ticket to another person taking his place for that travel. The 24-hour rule applies here, too. When there are people going on weddings, then the travel agent has to generate the request 48 hours prior to the journey with all mandatory documents. The same applies to NCC cadets.

The tickets can be transferred only once. Steps to transfer the ticket:

1. Get a hardcopy (Printout) of your confirmed ticket.
2. Go to the nearest railway station, visit the reservation counter.
3. ID proof of the person, in whose name the ticket has to be transferred, must be carried. It can include Aadhar or Voting ID.
4. Now, you can apply for a ticket transfer over the counter.
