December 2,2024 - Saudi Arabia has started opening parts of Riyadh’s new metro system to reduce traffic and modernize the city. The metro system was launched by King Salman last week and is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan. This project aims to improve the quality of life for Riyadh’s residents.
Initial Phase Launch
In the first phase, three metro lines were activated. These include Line 1 (Blue Line), which runs along the Al Olaya-Al Batha route. Line 4 (Yellow Line) connects King Khalid International Airport Road, while Line 6 (Purple Line) covers Abdulrahman bin Auf Road and Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein bin Ali Road.
Upcoming Phases
The second phase of the metro will open on December 15, 2024. This phase will include two new lines: the Red Line and the Green Line.
Final Phase and Full Completion
The final phase is set to begin on January 5, 2025. This will see the opening of Line 3 (Orange Line), which runs along Al Madinah Al Munawwarah Road. With this, all six metro lines will be operational, covering 176 kilometers and serving 85 stations, including four main hubs.
