State government’s report on Ashray Palna Sthal Yojna (APSY) has highlighted that Udaipur division witnessed the highest number of abandoned infant boys. The report showed that at a State level 40% of safely abandoned infants were boys while 60% were girls.
A total of 36 infants were abandoned in Udaipur division out of which 20 were girls and 16 were boys. In Bikaner, 4 boys were abandoned as against 2 girls. Similarly in Kota, 6 boys were abandoned as compared to 5 girls.
The above figures highlight that gender of child may not be the sole or primary reason for abandonment of the child and more research is required to understand the other causes.
The report mentioned that a total of 117 infants were abandoned out of which 70 were girls while 47 were boys. Out of these 11 girls and 6 boys died while undergoing treatment while 100 of them are still alive.
