Anna Movement: Post Mumbai token fast

Anna Movement: Post Mumbai token fast

On the eve of New Year I had penned an article declaring the year 2011 as the year of Anna Hazare.
The onset of year 2012, however, proved to be a very un-auspicious year for the noble cause which he and his team had taken in hand because of the fact that his January 2012 token fast at Mumbai could not provide the desired momentun to his crusade against corruption. Particularly so as Maharashtra happens to be his native state and his ‘Karm Bhoomi’.

Many factors are responsible for not attracting support crowds in Mumbai ala at Delhi and New Delhi.

A particular section of his detractors attributes it to with holding of support by RSS/BJP which they think was the biggest contributor in Delhi. Others feel that the reason could be team Anna’s targeting of a particular political party namely Congress while all other political out fits are equally involved in promoting corruption.

Many other causes have been advanced by the so-called analysts in print as well as in electronic media.

Be that as it may, in the last article, I had mentioned that the issue of corruption in every walk of life is a middle class phenomenon and the burden is also mostly felt and suffered by this section of society.

Although the poor people bear the burden but mostly they are not the ones who promote corruption.

As regards the wealthy and the Corporate; they are immune to the effects of corruption because they manage the system to their advantage. The poor people and inhibitors of remote areas and far off villages must be unaware of scandals like 2G and Commonwealth games and other high flying nomenclatures associated with big corruption.

And mostly, it is this section of Indian populace who vote and decide the winners and losers in every election. The arm chair democrats and drawing room experts may even not be taking the trouble of casting their votes. The politicians and the beaurocracy know this and no amount of team Anna’s election eve campaigns are going to change this scenario.

The results of elections post Anna fasts bear witness to this analysis. The results of on going elections in the five states are not going to be any different.

So what is to be done? Should the shop of anti corruption movement be closed? The Answer is definitely not ‘yes’.

The movement is historic in post independence India and a viable idea. It has to be carried on albeit with a different stratagem in the light of ground realities.

It involves multi prong action including continuous programs for inculcating moral values and campaigns at grass root levels. Anna’s middle class followers should keep unity and show the courage to take the movement to its logical conclusion.

Now what should be the next necessary step to be taken? Pour on your suggestions and thoughts to think and discuss on a conclusive idea.”
