What is ISRO's Space Docking Experiment (SPADEX)

If successful, SPADEX will bring India closer to achieving big milestones in space exploration

November 25, 2024 - ISRO is preparing for an important mission called the Space Docking Experiment (SPADEX), scheduled for December 20, 2024. This mission will test technologies needed for India’s future space station and human spaceflight programs.

What Is SPADEX About?

ISRO will launch a satellite made of two parts. After reaching space, these two parts will separate and then reconnect, or “dock,” to become one complete satellite.

Why Is This Important?

Refuelling Satellites – To extend their life.

Transporting Systems in Space – Sending parts to repair or upgrade existing satellites.

Future Human Missions – Eventually allowing spacecraft to transfer astronauts from one vehicle to another.

Critical Technology for Future Space Goals

SPADEX will also test space rendezvous technology, where two spacecraft meet in the same orbit and stay close. This is a key step for India to build its own space station in the future.
