Now Recharge Possible for Only Calling and SMS
TRAI amends mobile tariff rules; consumers will not be compelled to buy mobile data if not needed; STV limit validity extended to 365 days; greater flexibility in recharge options
Udaipur, December 25, 2024 – The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has amended tariff rules allowing consumers who do not use mobile data to get separate plans for only voice calls and SMS. Telecom companies have so far been selling calling and SMS services along with internet plans. Now, TRAI has directed mobile operators to offer tariff plans exclusively for calling and SMS services.
The telecom regulator has instructed telecom companies to offer recharge plans based on customer needs.
Apart from this, the limit on special tariff vouchers (STVs) has been removed, extending the validity from 90 days to 365 days. According to the order, all telecom operators will offer at least one special voucher for voice calls and SMS.
TRAI has also asked telecom operators to provide more recharge options to bring greater flexibility in recharge prices. This means telecom companies can now offer recharge vouchers in any price range, but they must also provide at least one "recharge coupon" worth a minimum of Rs 10.
TRAI says that this change in recharge plans will benefit over 150 million 2G users, dual SIM users, and rural residents. This will make recharge plans more affordable and convenient for elderly people, women or men living at home, especially for those with broadband connections at home.
