Number of Kidnap-turned-Runaway Girls goes up

From past 6 months, Udaipur district has witnessed increasing number of cases lodged in several police stations of kidnap and abduction of girls. However, what is more shocking is that, in more than half of the cases it was revealed afterwards that kidnapped girls actually elope with boys.

Out of 36 such cases registered in district’s several police stations, 30 cases were of those girls who are above 18-year of age and 28 cases were falsified later, after the victim either confessed of going with the boy on her own wish or the same was revealed through police investigations.

Most of such cases are registered in rural area of Udaipur district, where villagers occasionally opt for laboring work and travel to the city, most of these laborers are young men and women, who get to know each other during their daily travel.

The worrisome statistics are pointing towards social imbalance in villages and tribal belts, where society is made on stringent customs.

After such incidents, both the girl and boy and their families face embarrassment and sometimes also thrown out of village or society.

Where government is adhered to help rural population with needed facilities and better financial opportunities, somewhere, such social turbulence are often ignored as nobody dares to talk openly on such proscribed issues.
