WhatsApp also testing its Messenger App's URL verification feature which can help determine whether a URL they received is a secure link to a web page
January 4, 2025 - WhatsApp is soon going to roll out a new reverse image search feature that has been designed to curb misinformation. This will allow users to check if the image shared with them has been edited, morphed or tampered with. This is to prevent the spread of misinformation and fake messages and images on social media.
WhatsApp will allow users to utilise Google Search platform to know if the photo shared on the messenger app is genuine or morphed. A shortcut will be added in the app to start the search. By tapping on the image in a WhatsApp conversation, users will find a “Search on web” option in the three-dot menu. This option will launch a Google reverse image search. The search will check the image against Google’s vast database to see if it has appeared elsewhere online or is related to any false claims.
Additionally, WhatsApp has started testing its Messenger App's URL verification feature. The user has the option to obtain link information through a Google search whenever a URL is shared with them. To access this option, the person simply needs to long-press the URL link. This feature can help determine whether or not the URL they received is a secure link to a web page.
