21 Killed in Two-High Speed Train Collision in Spain

More than 75 injured in the train mishap in southern Spain on January 18; authorities investigate cause of the Malaga–Madrid rail derailment

Jan 19, 2026 - At least 21 people have been feared killed in a tragic mishap after two trains collided in southern Spain on Sunday, January 18, evening. Around 75 people are injured and had to be hospitalised. The death toll is expected to rise even as rescue teams retrieve bodies from the wreckage, said the country’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente.

The accident occurred after a high-speed Iryo train, which was going from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and crossed onto the parallel track slamming into another train which was coming at high speed from the opposite direction. The second Madrid-Huelva train derailed, too, and went careening down an embankment with its carriages badly damaged, with twisted metal and seats. The Malaga-Madrid train was carrying around 300 passengers while the second train reportedly had 200 passengers.

Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed grief at the mishap, calling it “a night of deep pain” for the country.

The cause of the crash is being investigated. The Transport Minister has called the derailement as "really strange" since it happened on a straight stretch of track which had been renewed just in May.
