Air India Plane to London with 242 Onboard Crashes in Ahmedabad

The Air India flight #AI171 crashed minutes after it took off from Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 pm today; as per reports there were 242 people onboard - of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals

June 12, 2025 - An Air India flight #AI171 bound for London Gatwick from Ahmedabad crashed soon after take off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport today. The aircraft plunged into the Meghani area of the city sending up huge plumes of smoke visible from afar. 

There were 242 people (including crew) on board the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner - 230 passengers and 12 crew members, including 2 pilots. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was reportedly among the passengers on the ill-fated flight.

The flight crashed minutes after it took off at 1:38 pm today. 

The cause of the crash is not known yet, nor is the number of casualties. The intensity of the explosion and the fire is being attributed to the aircraft being loaded with fuel for its long-haul journey. 

The incident has triggered off an emergency response by the government with fire engines, ambulances and medical teams rushing to the spot. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah called up the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Police Commissioner and has assured of all help from the Centre.

According to Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, as quoted by AP, Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 pm local time.

Ahmedabad aiport operations have been suspended until further notice. Passengers are being advised to check flight status. 

“Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation,” the airport said in a statement.
