Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar dies after his plane crashes during an attempted emergency landing in Baramati; four others were onboard

Jan 28, 2026 – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died after the plane he was onboard crashed in Baramati town of Pune district on Wednesday (January 28) morning at around 8:45 am.

A statement released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation read: "Ajit Pawar, Deputy CM of Maharashtra, was onboard along with 2 more personnel (1 PSO and 1 attendant) and 2 crew (PIC+FO) members. As per initial information, no person on board has survived the crash."

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was on his way to his home town of Baramati to attend several political events related to the zilla panchayat elections. The plane carrying him and four others crash-landed while trying to attempt an emergency landing on Baramati airstrip. The reason behind the emergency landing is being investigated.

The crash site show a raging fire and parts of the aircraft strewn around. Further details are awaited even as rescue operations are being carried out. Initial reports suggest there are likely to be no survivors.
