NHAI to Launch 'Stray Animal Alerts' on National Highways
NHAI to launch a pilot alert system for stray animals on Jaipur-Agra and Jaipur-Rewari highways, aiming to reduce accidents during low visibility
Jan 15, 2026 - To prevent accidents caused by the sudden appearance of animals on national highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has developed an alert system in collaboration with telecom service providers. The initiative aims to reduce accidents on national highways, especially during foggy conditions and low visibility, when animals often stray onto the roads unexpectedly.
Under the project, location-based alerts will be issued to travellers on national highways. A private telecom company has upgraded its platform to enable real-time nationwide delivery of these alerts.
These alerts will warn drivers approximately 10 kilometres in advance of identified high-risk stretches, giving them sufficient time to slow down and drive cautiously.
Safety warnings under the pilot project will be delivered via Flash SMS, followed by a voice alert. The Flash SMS will warn travellers about stray animal-prone zones and urge them to drive carefully.
This pilot project is being implemented on the Jaipur-Agra and Jaipur-Rewari national highway corridors, which have been identified as high-risk zones for stray animal movement. If it proves successful, NHAI plans to roll out this alert system across all national highways in India.
