At Least 16 Dead, 21 Injured in Lisbon Funicular Crash

Crash marks one of the deadliest transport incidents in Portugal's recent history

Sept 5, 2025 - At least 16 people were killed and around 21 injured in a horrific crash of a funicular in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on September 4. The incident occurred after the carriage of the historic Gloria Furnicular derailed and went careening down the street before slamming into a building. The cause of the accident is yet unknown.

The injured included foreigners from Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, South Korea and France. Unconfirmed sources say the dead include Portuguese, Koreans and one Swiss as also the brake operator.

The cable-pulled train has long been a major tourist draw offering scenic views of the city landscape. The incident happened during rush hour and sources say a loose cable caused the funicular to lose control. The crash of the Elevator da Gloria is one of Portugal’s deadliest transport incidents in recent history.
