A major incident was averted after Ghantaghar, one of Udaipur’s oldest heritage sites caught fire due to a short circuit in the transformer adjacent to the Tower.

Fortunately, being a weekend, the shops were all closed and there was negligible traffic in the area, thus causing minimal damage.  On a week day, there is a big stall under the tower and the area serves as a permanent parking spot for two wheelers.  Thus a big incident could have been the result, if this fire had happened on a weekday.

It took approximately an hour to control the flames once the fire brigade arrived on the spot after instructions from the Police station opposite the Clock Tower.  After seeing flames rise from the transformer, the people nearby informed the Police station who then took action.

Not much damage to the Clock Tower, but the high flames have resulted in black soot covering one side of the tower.
