Dhaka Jet Crash Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 27

F-7BGI fighter jet crashes into Milestone School in Uttara during training flight; national mourning declared as investigation begins

July 22, 2025 – The death toll in the July 21 Bangladesh jet crash has gone up to 27 with 171 injured, some of them with serious burns. At least 25 of them injured are in a critical condition, according to reports.

The F-7BGI aircraft, an advanced version of the Chinese J-7 fighter, was on a training flight when it suffered a technical malfunction and crashed into Milestone School and College in the Uttara neighbourhood of Dhaka. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam who also perished in the crash, tried to navigate the F-7 Air Force jet to a less populated area but could not avoid the two-storey school building, said the military.  

A high-level Air Force panel has been set up to probe the incident which is regarded as the most fatal plane crash in Dhaka in recent history. Fatalties include students and teachers. 

Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the country’s interim government, expressed his deep sorrow in a statement saying, “the loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected by this accident, is irreparable. This is a moment of profound pain for the nation.”

A one-day State mourning has been declared by the government.
